Vaccinating your puppy is essential to ensure they are protected and safe from potentially fatal diseases. A full course of vaccinations will protect your new pet for one year. We recommend annual boosters for adult dogs – this is also a good opportunity for a thorough health check each year.
Three yearly vaccinations for dogs are also now available – our vets and nurses can guide you through the various vaccination options.
Vaccinating your dog
Puppies need a series of vaccinations to protect them from Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvovirus. The vaccination we recommend also protects against Corona virus and Leptospirosis – protection that is relevant for the Crookwell district.
The ability of puppies to develop strong immunity after vaccination depends on the levels of protective antibodies they may have received from their mother and how long these last. This is why a series of 3 vaccinations are recommended (see below) – to ensure these antibodies do not impact negatively on a pup’s long term immunity.
Our recommended program for puppies and adult dogs:
Age | Recommended vaccination |
---|---|
Puppies from 6 weeks of age | Vaccinate at 6, 8 and 10 weeks with Protech C3 + C2i. This protects against Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Corona virus and Leptospirosis. Then vaccinate annually. In some circumstances – depending on geographic location and breed – we may recommend a 4th vaccination at 12 weeks. |
Puppies and dogs 10 weeks or older | Depending on the age of the puppy or dog and its health status, we may recommend a vaccination program of two vaccinations 2-4 weeks apart with Protech C3 + C2i, or one vaccination to protect for 1 year. Then vaccinate annually. |
Adult dogs | We recommend an annual booster vaccination with Protech C3 + C2i, or we can discuss commencing a program of three yearly vaccinations. |
Kennel Cough
Kennel Cough is a highly contagious upper respiratory disease in dogs caused by a mix of viruses and bacteria. Kennel Cough vaccination is essential if your dog is booked into a boarding kennel (a minimum of 72 hours before entering the kennels) and we recommend annual protection if your pet is in situations of high dog density.
Routine Kennel Cough protection requires 1 vaccination with Protech Bronchishield III Intranasal vaccine at 8 weeks (or older), then annual boosters.
